Well done to the runners from P5,P6 & P7 who took part in the XC League Final at Mallusk today. Conditions were surprisingly good considering the amount of recent rainfall, this lead to a ferocious race pace for the girls and boys.
The boys were delighted to receive their Southern League Winners trophies after a season of hard running. Well done to the girls who finished strongly.
Many thanks to the parents who came along to support and assist with pre-race preparations.
Girls Race:
After a frenetic start, the team settled in for a challenging 1500m. Grace had a great start and remained in the leading pack until the finish line, completing the course in a time of 6:31, 5th Overall in Northern Ireland and highest placed runner for St. John’s. A magnificent performance. There is no doubt she will climb the steps of the podium at this event next season. Grace was closely followed home by Niamh, Sarah, Annie, Muireann and Ciara, giving the girls a finishing position of 10th in Northern Ireland. Each of them had their own race story to tell at the end and should be commended for their effort.
Boys Race
The boys race was hotly contested from start to finish with the pace being more like a sprint than long distance. The runners had no choice, other than to adapt to this very quickly, which is not easy. Tadhg used his race prowess and talent to come home in 6th overall in a time of 5:17, 11 seconds off the winning time, a fantastic performance.
Tadhg was followed home by Sean in a fabulous 21st place, who ran a very measured race, securing valuable points for the team. Sean has been a key member of the team this year and should be applauded for this performance.
Darragh was next home in a time of 5:43, this was brilliant considering he had to recover from a tumble early on in the race.
Padraig finished out the top four in a time of 5:57, which was enough to give the team overall victory. Well done Padraig, super running.
Joey and Daire brought the squad home in six minutes which is highly commendable for Cross - Country, especially as both runners fell early on in the race. Well done .
Although this was the league finale there are some more XC events before the end of the year. So keep up the running!
