Eco Schools NI - Green Flag Award May 2026!

19th May 2026

We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded 'Green Flag' status for our contributions to all things Eco within our school!

This is a fantastic achievement which we are very proud of!

The assessors made the following comments about the strengths of your school evident in the assessment:

THE ECO-COMMITTEE:
The pupils put great effort into getting elected with preparing and giving a short speech. It's also great that school governors and the local community have shown their support.

ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEW:
It's good that the pupils are involved in completing an environmental review on a yearly basis to help keep an up to date baseline. It's also good that it has helped to form the basis of the topics selected.

ACTION PLAN:
St John's Primary School has successfully begun to explore the outdoor learning topic though getting their stuck into growing. It's great to see the polytunnel being used by each class to grow something different. The school also was part of the hedgerow heroes’ programme. Waste has also been explored successfully through clothes swaps (Bring & Buy Sale), book donations and having waster monitors in place who take part in daily patrols.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION:
Detailed audit that gives a baseline to where the school is terms of outdoor learning.

LINKING TO THE CURRICULUM:
It is good that the eco-schools activities are included in the yearly curriculum planning and that the activities are spread out among all the year groups in the school.

INFORM AND INVOLVE:
It's great to see such a wide range of communication used to share across the whole school family. In addition to the internal communications St John's also actively reaches to parents and the wider community though a newsletter, PTA meetings, Governor meetings and sharing articles in the local press.

ECO-CODE:
The eco - code is widely displayed around the school and it is reviewed on a yearly basis to keep it relevant. It's also good that pupils outside the eco-committee helped to create it.

All very positive feedback! We even have our produce growing in our Polytunnel, which will hopefully be ready soon!

Well done to our entire school community for their contributions in helping us achieve this award!
