Cumann na mBunscol League & Edge Innovate Cup
A group of 12 boys from St. John’s travelled to Edendork GAA pitch to compete in the Cumann na mBunscol league. Like the girls, victory at this tournament would ensure qualification for Finals Day at Garvaghy on the 9th June.
To reach Garvaghy, the boys would have to overcome opposition in the shape of Annaghmore, Ardboe, Edendork and Dungannon.
The opening game, against Annaghmore was played in damp slippy conditions, luckily the Moy appeared to adapt to the pitch conditions and eventually ran out winners. Game two could have been the final in so many ways as both Ardboe and the Moy were determined to out do one another. However great goalkeeping and strong defensive play put St. John’s well in front until full time. The remaining two fixtures in the group, against Dungannon and Edendork were much calmer affairs, allowing the boys to settle into a rhythm and the scores came thick and fast. At the lunchtime break, the Moy had topped the league and had successfully secured a place at the finals in Garvaghy.
After the lunchtime break, the top two teams in the group, Ardboe and the Moy, would contest a final for the Edge Innovate Cup. Ardboe had clearly learned a lot from the previous meeting and were three points up at halftime. This deficit appeared only to spark the Moy team into life and after a tirade of attacks St . John’s were back in the driving seat. At the final whistle the boys celebrated but also displayed great sportsmanship to their opponents and the referee.
Needless to say the bus was a very happy place on the way home, especially with the cup secured safely in the front seat. We wish the boys good luck at the County Final.
Thanks to Michael Conroy for his support and guidance with the team.
